Filed under: App Review PhotoAvatar (US $.99) is a remarkable iPhone/iPod touch novelty app from the makers of HourFace , an app I liked quite a lot when I reviewed it a few months ago. PhotoAvatar turns a properly taken photo into any one of three alien avatars, each so realistic that it’s eerie.

This is curious , at least amidst a massive publishing war with Amazon. According to the WSJ, Apple’s putting its massive newspaper-and-magazine-revival-on-the-iPad effort on the “backburner in favor of focusing on other content,” like its long-festering plan to bundle TV shows as a pseudo-subscription service through iTunes, as well as selling certain TV shows for a buck an episode.

Three “regions” are available in the US — Western [ iTunes link ], Central [ iTunes link ], and Eastern [ iTunes link ]. Each region is currently on sale for $24.99 until April 12, at which point they’ll be regularly priced at $29.99
