Nothing derails the excitement of playing games online with your friends quite like finding out that you don’t have a certain piece of DLC required to join their game. The USPTO recently approved a Microsoft patent application (filed way back in August 2008) for a system that would enable users to seamlessly purchase and download game add-ons from the Xbox Live Marketplace when alerted by an in-game prompt, provided the content was required for a particular online game they attempted to launch. The process would allow you to make purchases without being forced out of a game lobby you might be sharing with friends — though, really, what kind of “friends” wouldn’t warn you about your game’s newfound incompatibility before inviting you in?

A Washington court of appeal has ruled in favour of Nintendo and Microsoft following accusations the companies breached a patent relating to controller power conversions. Patent holder Fenner Investments first sued the two console makers three years ago, reports Gamasutra, claiming that their devices used a design they had patented. The patent in question is for a ‘Low-Voltage Joystick Port Interface’ described as an analogue stick which outputs to a digital signal – which is found in the majority of controllers for home consoles.

Dear Microsoft, you did a good job at out-Appling Apple with the Windows Phone 7 . At least on paper
Today at MIX10 Microsoft told our sibling site WMExperts that there would be no cut, copy, and paste in Windows Phone 7 Series, which follows on the news of an Apple iPhone-style closed app market and lack of 3rd party multitasking .
Windows Phone 7 won’t have full multitasking for third party apps, which, given Windows Mobile’s multitasking past, took people off guard. Here’s how Microsoft’s Scott Guthrie answers for this. Warning: The rationalizations might sound a little familiar.
